ABOUT THE CREATOR

Stephanie Habib is a Master’s candidate on the Media Practice for Development & Social Change course at the University of Sussex. She previously worked as an English as a foreign language teacher, in France and Spain, and prior to that was a journalist covering higher education issues and startup innovation in Arizona, United States.
She holds BA degrees in Journalism and French, and her previous academic work focused principally on data collection and visualization, with an emphasis on interactivity as a tool for social engagement with the news.
Her current research focuses media analysis and media framing, with a particular focus on how news and entertainment media are utilized to communicate and enforce general societal beliefs about responsibility for social issues — in particular poverty and social mobility. Women’s personal safety falls under that purview, as an inability to move safely through public spaces may inhibit women from participating fully in economic, professional, and social opportunities. Considering who is responsible for addressing this issue, and how the media enforces or reinforces these ideas, is key.
